MISSION

PEAK

Mission Peak (aka Three Trees) is a 4.5-mile round trip hike in Granada Hills that takes you to a beautiful overlook high in the Santa Susanna Mountains. There are several options for climbing MP, but for the route described here, from the trailhead, you'll catch the Sulphur Springs Fire Road at the northwest end of the cul-de-sac. Begin climbing almost immediately and soon pass the name-sake Sulphur Springs, located in a concrete tank among heavy foliage (be careful for poison oak all through this section). Continue climbing upward as the road meanders and the views become progressively more beautiful until you arrive at the steep switchbacks just below a small grove of oaks; the Burden Box is located in the westernmost of these oaks. The summit is a short, steep climb beyond. Total elevation gain is about 1325ft.

From the 118 Fwy, in Granada Hills, go north on Balboa Blvd for just about 2-miles and turn left (west) onto Sesnon Blvd. Continue on Sesnon Blvd for about 1-mile to Neon Way. Turn right on Neon Way; the trailhead is in the cul-de-sac.

Mt McCOY

The trail to Mt McCoy (aka Cross Mountain) is located in the westernmost part of Simi Valley. The official route is short, as is the total elevation gain, but the views are expansive and take in nearly all of Simi Valley. From the trailhead, walk south past the sign for a couple of hundred feet and then bear right, stepping over a rail that's used to keep motorcycles out. At this point many people head straight up the mountain, towards the cross, but the official trail continues south and then begins a mild switchback uphill, gaining 560ft of elevation over about 1.3-miles (2.6-miles round trip). At the top you will find the cross, a couple of benches, and beautiful views. There are no trees on the summit of Mt McCoy; the Burden Box is at the base of a Sumac bush on the northwest corner of the cross.

Get to the trailhead, from the 118 Fwy in Simi Valley, by heading south on Madera Street for roughly 1.5-miles and then turning right on Royal Ave. Make an immediate right onto Acapulco Ave and then a quick left onto Washburn. The trail begins on the south side of the road, just where Washburn curves and becomes Los Amigos Ave.
